Replacing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD time-of-day battery

Learn how to replace the time-of-day battery that is part of a service action.

To complete this procedure, you must have already completed the removal procedure. For the removal procedure instructions, see Removing the 8248-L4T, 8408-E8D, or 9109-RMD time-of-day battery.

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to replace a time-of-day battery assembly. For instructions, see Replacing a part by using the HMC.

If you do not have an HMC, complete the following steps to replace the time-of-day battery:

Attention:
  • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge from damaging your hardware.
  • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
  • If you do not have a wrist strap prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  1. Insert the time-of-day battery (A) in the slot on the service processor card, being sure to insert the battery with the polarity (+/-) the same as the battery that was removed. See Figure 1.

  2. Replace the service processor card:
    1. Align the service processor card with the top and bottom guide rails (A) and slide the service processor card straight into the card slot. See Figure 2.
    2. Rotate the locking lever (B) in the direction shown to seat the service processor card.

  3. If you removed the power cords, install them by completing the following steps:
    1. Identify the system unit you are servicing in the rack.
    2. Connect all power cords to the unit you are servicing. See Figure 3.
    3. Close the rear rack door.

  4. Access the ASMI.

If you are already connected to the ASMI, go to the next step.

To access the ASMI through the HMC, complete the following steps:
    1. Select the server that you are working with.
    2. Click Tasks.
    3. Click Operations > Launch Advanced System Management (ASM).
  5. Restore the service processor settings.
To set the time-of-day, complete the following steps:
    1. In the navigation area of the ASMI, expand System Configuration.
    2. Select Time of Day under System Configuration.
    3. If the system is powered off, the right pane displays a form that shows the current date (month, day, and year) and time (hours, minutes, and seconds).
    4. Change the date, the time, or both, and click Save settings.
  6. Go to Verifying a repair.
