This topic describes the procedure for replacing
a battery
backup unit (BBU) on a ServeRAID adapter in 3958 DD4, DD5, and AP1 (DD4-based) servers.
Procedure
Perform the following steps to replace
a BBU on a ServeRAID
adapter:
- Prepare the system for FRU replacement
(see Preparing the system for FRU replacement for the TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6).
- Verify that the server is powered off
by checking that the power LED is flashing on the operator information
panel. Then, disconnect the power cords and all external cables as
necessary to replace the device.
- Remove the top cover (see Removing the top cover for the TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6).
- Remove the top cover bracket (see Removing the top cover bracket for the TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6).
- Pull the blue handle 1 on
the RAID adapter carrier 2 up to extract
it from the server (Figure 1).
Figure 1. Extracting the RAID
adapter carrier
- Disconnect
the SAS cables from the RAID adapter.
Note: Mark
the cables before removing them so they can be returned to their original
positions.
- Press the release latch 1 and
remove the RAID adapter from the carrier (Figure 2).
Figure 2. Removing
the RAID adapter from the carrier
- Remove the battery carrier card and the battery 2 from
the RAID adapter 1 . You must
remove the three screws 3 to separate
them (Figure 3).
Note: The
location of the screws will be different depending on the model of
RAID adapter. The most current RAID adapter contains the three screws
on the top of the BBU.

card from the adapter
- Install
the replacement BBU onto the adapter using the
three screws.
- Install the RAID adapter onto
the RAID adapter carrier.
- Connect the SAS cables
to the RAID adapter.
Note: Attach
the SAS cable from port 0 to the lower backplane and the SAS cable
from port 1 to the upper backplane (if one is installed). See
Figure 4 for
port locations.

controller
- Slide
the RAID adapter carrier and RAID adapter assembly 3 into
the slot 1 on the side of the server
(Figure 5). Make sure the carrier is flat against the side wall of the server
so that the adapter is installed in the connector correctly.

the RAID adapter carrier
- Install
the top cover bracket (see Replacing the top cover bracket for the TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6).
- Install the top cover (see Replacing the top cover for the TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6).
- Connect the cables and power cords.
- Slide
the server into the rack.
- Turn on all attached
devices and the server.
- Upgrade
the firmware level as described in Updating the firmware of an MR10k MegaRAID or ServeRAID M5015 card for the TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G (Gateway), ProtecTIER V3.3.6.
