Upgrade an instance of a previous version

To convert an existing instance of an earlier supported version of IBM® Security Verify Directory to a functional instance of the latest version and to continue with the existing configuration files, you must upgrade an instance.

The upgrade process preserves changes to the schema definitions, changes to configuration files, and the data of a directory server instance.

Upgrading an instance from a previous version requires you to complete the following process:

  1. Complete the installation of IBM Security Verify Directory.
  2. Upgrade an existing instance from a previous version.

IBM Security Verify Directory, version 10.0.1 server, and client can coexist with servers and clients of versions 10.0, 6.4 on supported operating systems.

You can directly upgrade instances of Directory Versions 10.0, 6.4, 6.3.1 and 6.3 to Version 10.0.1. You can also upgrade instance of Directory Suite 8.0.1 to a remote Version 10.0.1 instance.

Important: Direct upgrade of IBM Security Verify Directory, Version 6.1, and 6.2 instances to IBM Security Verify Directory, version 10.0.1 is not supported. You must upgrade Version 6.1 or 6.2 instances to Versions 6.3, 6.3.1 or 6.4, and then to Version 10.0.1.

You can upgrade an instance of a previous version in the following ways:

  • Upgrade an existing instance on a local computer with IBM Security Verify Directory Instance Administration Tool (idsxinst) or the idsimigr (recommended) command. You must not remove the directory server instance that you want to upgrade. For a full directory server instance, do not unconfigure the database. Upgrade is not supported if the directory server instance is removed or its database is unconfigured.
  • Upgrade an instance on a remote computer with the migbkup and idsimigr commands. For more information, see Upgrading a remote instance of a previous version with the idsimigr command.
Attention: You must back up the schema, configuration files, and database of an instance to recover from any upgrade failures.

DB2 database upgrade

When you upgrade an instance, its associated DB2® database is also upgraded if the DB2 version is earlier than the version supported by IBM Security Verify Directory, Version 10.0.1. The idsdbmigr command is run internally to upgrade the DB2 database.
Important: Direct upgrade of a directory server instance that is configured with DB2, Version 11.1 or 10.5 to an instance with DB2, Version 11.5.8.0 is supported. You must upgrade an instance that is configured with DB2, Versions 10.5 and earlier to an instance with DB2, Version 11.1, and then to an instance with DB2, Version 11.5.8.0.

Client installation upgrade

If you installed client-only features with IBM Security Verify Directory client installer, you do not require to upgrade. Clients from version 6.3, 6.3.1 and 6.4 can coexist with the 10.0.1 server and client on supported operating systems.
