This document provides information about what's new or what has changed in Data Protection for Microsoft SQL Server version 8.1.4.

What's new

Restore VSS backups to an alternate

You can now restore VSS backups to alternate instances. This feature is supported with Windows PowerShell cmdlets, Windows command prompt, and the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). The following restore options are available:

  • Restore local and IBM Spectrum Protect™ VSS backups. You can restore either to an alternate instances on the same server where the backup is taken or to an instance on a different server. For local backups, you can restore only to alternate instances on the same server.
  • Restore from VSS backups on virtual machines. You can restore to an alternate SQL server instance on the same server or to an instance on a different server.

For more information, see Restoring an SQL Server database to an alternate instance.

Configuration options
  • Clustersharedfolder option

When you set up a cluster environment, a password is required that is accessible to all nodes in the cluster. IBM Spectrum Protect includes a new clustersharedfolder option to specify the directory location in which to store the password file. For more information, see Clustersharedfolder.

  • RemoteSQLInstancePort option

The Data Protection for SQL Server configuration file (tdpsql.cfg) file includes a new option, RemoteSQLInstancePort. This option enables you to set AlwaysOn Preferences when using non-default SQL ports in an AlwaysOn Availability Group (AAG) environment and to connect to remote replica servers. The value is case-sensitive. Therefore, if the AAG replica name is specified in lowercase on the SQL server, then you must also specify the RemoteSQLInstancePort replica name in lowercase. For more information, see AlwaysOn Preferences.

Microsoft SQL Server 2017
With IBM Spectrum Protect Version 8.1.4, Microsoft SQL Server 2017 is supported.
