Optimize your storage environment by automatically tiering data to tape

With IBM Spectrum Protect Version 8.1.8, you can tier data from directory-container storage pools on disk to both cloud storage and tape storage. In previous releases, you could tier data only to cloud storage.

With this new feature, you can optimize your storage environment by releasing space on disk storage and tiering the data to physical tape devices or virtual tape libraries. In this way, you can take advantage of the cost efficiency of tape storage. In particular, if the storage environment includes disk storage pools in which data is not effectively deduplicated, consider tiering the data to tape. You can tier all data that meets a specified age threshold, or only inactive data that meets the age threshold.

To set up rules and subrules for tape tiering, use one of the following methods:
  • In the IBM Spectrum Protect Operations Center, click Storage > Tiering Rules.
  • On the command line, use the DEFINE STGRULE and DEFINE SUBRULE commands.
