Lower the cost of cloud-container storage pools by reclaiming space

With IBM Spectrum Protect™ Version 8.1.5, you can use the new cloud reclamation feature to reclaim space in cloud-container storage pools. You can move data from a larger, fragmented cloud container into a smaller, more fully utilized cloud container. In this way, you can help reduce the cost of using object storage for cloud-container storage pools.

Fragmentation occurs in cloud-container storage pools when data is deleted or expired. To reclaim the unused space in a cloud container, you can schedule a daily cloud reclamation operation by issuing the DEFINE STGRULE server command with the ACTIONTYPE=RECLAIM setting. When the unused space in the cloud container reaches the percentage that you specify, the data is moved into a smaller container. You can schedule an ad hoc reclamation operation by issuing the MOVE CONTAINER command with the default setting DEFRAG=YES.

Alternatively, you can use the Operations Center graphical user interface to schedule cloud reclamation operations and to estimate the space savings that can be achieved.
