Replacing an SSD module on the PCIe RAID and SSD SAS adapter

Use this procedure to replace an integrated solid-state drive (SSD) on a PCIe serial-attached SCSI (SAS) RAID and SSD Adapter.

Complete the following steps to perform a nonconcurrent SSD replacement on a PCIe SAS RAID and SSD adapter:
Note: When an SSD on the PCIe adapter fails, the entire adapter must be removed from the system prior to replacing the individual SSD. See the documentation for your system for removing a PCI RAID and SSD SAS adapter from the system.
  1. Remove the adapter from the system. See PCI adapters.
Important: Ensure to follow the concurrent or nonconcurrent replacement procedures depending on the type of data protection enabled:
    • If the data protection is RAID, use the nonconcurrent procedure.
    • If the data protection is mirrored (card to card) and the SSD is located in the 5802 or 5803 expansion unit, use the concurrent procedure.
    • If the data protection is mirrored (card to card) but the SSD is not located in the 5802 or 5803 expansion unit, use the nonconcurrent procedure.
  2. Place the adapter on a surface that is electrostatic-discharge protected.
  3. Lift the lever (A) for the SSD that you are replacing to a fully vertical position.
Note: Each of the levers (A) undocks two SSDs at a time.

  4. With the lever (A) in the vertical position, firmly push the lever (A) away from the adapter tailstock to undock the two SSDs from their connectors.

  5. Lift the single device retaining latch (B) for only the SSD that you are replacing by first moving it away from the center of the SSD divider and then lifting it to a fully vertical position.

  6. Using the device access finger openings (C), push the single SSD that you are replacing out of the device holder.

  7. Grasp the SSD and continue to remove it from the adapter.
  8. Install the replacement SSD by performing steps 2 to 7.
Note: Ensure that the device retaining latch and undocking lever are in the fully closed position.
  9. Reinstall the adapter in the system. See PCI adapters.
  10. If you replaced the SSD as a part of another procedure, return to that procedure.
