Equipment groups

An equipment group is a collection of components that are related from a functional or work management perspective. For example, you can create an equipment group for the valves that are in use across multiple locations, or the components that are relevant to a particular preventive maintenance strategy.

You create an equipment group by associating one or more locations with an equipment group record. It is not possible to add assets directly to an equipment group. However, when you associate a location with an equipment group, the assets that are associated with that location are associated with the equipment group by extension.

When you associate a location with an equipment group, you can specify whether the equipment group is the default equipment group for the specified location. A location can have one default boundary equipment group, and one default non-boundary equipment group. Default equipment groups are automatically added to work management records for the location or the associated asset. However, you can override default equipment group values with other values.

You can categorize equipment groups by type, for example, functional, outage, and schedule. You can specify the applicability of an equipment group to specific plant modes.

You can only delete equipment groups that have no associated locations, and a status of Draft or Inactive.

Boundary and non-boundary equipment groups

Equipment groups are classified as boundary or non-boundary.

Boundary equipment group
Identifies some or all of the components that form the clearance boundary. You can relate only boundary equipment groups to the tagged components on a clearance. You cannot use a boundary equipment group as the primary equipment group on a clearance, work order, or permit.
Non-boundary equipment group
Identifies components whose relationship is not based on the boundary function.

Equipment groups and work management records

You can relate equipment groups to different types of work management records, including lineups, work orders, permits, clearances, and preventive maintenance records. Different types of relationships are possible:

Primary equipment group relationship
Used to identify the main equipment group for the work management record as a whole. You can specify only one primary equipment group for each work management record. Typically, the primary equipment group is the default non-boundary equipment group for the main component on the record.
Secondary equipment group relationships
Identify other equipment groups that are relevant to the work management record. You can relate multiple equipment groups to a single work management record in this way.
Component relationships
Links equipment groups with specific components in a lineup plan, lineup, or clearance. You can relate boundary equipment groups only to the components on a clearance.

On the List tab of the corresponding work management applications, you can search for the records that are related to a particular equipment group.
