Power BI Local Setup

This page contains a guide on how to create a Power BI Report Server connection for your on-premises environment:

Create a new Power BI connection

  • In the main IBM Automatic Data Lineage page, click on the Add connection button

  • Type powerbi and click on the PowerBI panel

  • Name the connection

    • Pick any name and put it in the Connection name field

    • We recommend using the same name for the PowerBI folder name

  • Find your Power BI Report Server folder.

    • Open your Power BI Report Server in a browser, you should see its URL in a format like <address>:<port>/<server_folder>/browse. The <server_folder> from the URL is your server folder. We’ll need it in the next step.

    • See the picture on the right for an example, where BiReports is the server folder we’re looking for.

  • Set up the connection

    • Pick extraction mode Local

    • Choose if Automatic Data Lineage should use HTTP or HTTPS to connect to your Power BI Report Server

    • Fill Local server address with the address of your Power BI server

    • Fill Local server port with the port of your Power BI server

    • Fill Local server username with a username that Automatic Data Lineage should use to connect to your Power BI server

    • Fill Local server password with a password for the provided username

    • Fill Local server folder with the name you found in the previous step

  • Click on Validate

    • Message Validation succeeded should appear if everything is set correctly

    • If Configuration validation failed message appears instead:

      • You can check logs to find more info about the message

      • You can double-check all filled properties and try if you can open your Power BI Report Server in a broser using these properties

      • You can contact our support if validation still fails

  • Choose which workspace and reports should be extracted and analyzed

  • Click on the Save button to save the connection
