Configuring carrier services

A carrier service is a service that defines delivery details. For example, Next-day ground shipping. You can create, view, edit, and delete carrier services. You can also associate one or more carrier services with carriers and shipping groups.

Procedure

  1. From the menu, click Configuration > Carriers to display the Carriers list page.
  2. To create a carrier service, select Create carrier service from the Action options menu.
By default, carrier services are activated and are considered for fulfillment at all nodes.
  3. From the Select carrier list, select the carrier that the carrier service is associated with.
Each carrier service can be associated with more than one carrier.
  4. In the Carrier service name field, enter the unique name of the carrier service.
The Carrier service name is limited to 100 characters.
  5. In the Carrier service ID field, enter the unique carrier service identifier.
The Carrier service ID is limited to 40 characters. You cannot use spaces for the identifier.
  6. Optional: From the Add to shipping groups list, select existing shipping groups to add the carrier service to the specified shipping group.
  7. In the Dimension factor field, enter the carrier-defined weight calculation.
The dimension factor is based on the size of the package rather than its actual weight. Each carrier service uses a different dimension factor, and the carrier service must be consulted to determine the proper dimension factor to be used.
Important: The dimensional weight factor unit of measure is based on the system of measure that is used in the operating country. You can also define multiple units of measure. During a fulfillment estimate, Sterling Intelligent Promising chooses the correct unit of measure based on the defined system unit of measure. Dimension weight is a key value that is used to evaluate shipping weight based on the shipping dimension and weight of the item.
You can input the Volume threshold, which uses the unit of measure that is equivalent to the Dimension factor.

Input Volume threshold. The Volume threshold is considered during cost optimization. If the volume of the package exceeds the Volume threshold, then shipping charges are applied according to either the dimensional weight or the physical weight of the package, whichever is greater. Otherwise, the shipping charges are applied according to the physical weight of the package.

  8. In the Weight limit field, enter the maximum weight limit for the carrier service.
The Weight limit ensures that the shipping weight does not exceed the carrier weight limit. The correct unit of measure is selected based on the system default unit of measure that you defined.
  9. In the Default transit time field, enter the estimated transit time for the carrier service to deliver, based on the service level agreement.
  10. Click Save.

By default, carrier services are activated and are considered for fulfillment at all nodes. To deactivate carrier services at specific nodes, see Configuring nodes.

In addition to managing carrier services through the user interface (UI), you can also use the Carrier Service APIs.

What to do next

To edit a carrier service, click the Action options menu and select Edit carrier service. After editing, click Save.

To delete a carrier service, click the Action options menu and select Delete carrier service.

For more information about disabling a carrier service for a shipping group through the Carrier services user interface, see Configuring shipping groups.

For more information about deactivating a carrier service at a node so that the node does not consider the carrier service to fulfill orders, see Activating and deactivating shipping groups at a node.
