Overview of remote servers

In the Data Source Explorer, you can access remote data sources that are defined to a federated database.

The workbench supports connecting to a WebSphere® Information Integrator federated database and accessing the remote data sources that are defined to the federated database. In a federated system, a federated database is the database that is within the federated server. Users and applications interface with the federated database. To these clients, the data sources appear as a single collective database in DB2 Universal Database™.

This version of the workbench supports access to the following data sources:

Defined remote servers

A defined remote server is a data source that is defined to a federated database. You can connect to a defined remote server and access the remote data sources. All of the defined remote servers for a federated database are listed in the Defined Remote Servers folder.

The properties view for a defined remote server is a read-only view that provides information about the data source, such as type, version, nicknames, and options.

Undefined remote servers

An undefined remote server is a data source that you can potentially connect to. To connect to this data source, you must use the Create Server wizard to define the data source to the federated database. To open the Create Server wizard, right-click the data source and select Create Server. After you create the server definition for a data source, the data source is added to the Defined Remote Servers folder.

The properties view for an undefined remote server is a read-only view that provides as much information as can be detected about a data source.

You can use the Filter wizard to specify a filter to limit the undefined remote servers that are displayed for each data source.
