Upgrading to a new release of DOORS from a release before version 9.0

When you upgrade to a new release of IBM Engineering Requirements Management DOORS (DOORS ) from a version earlier than 9.0, the previous version is retained on your system. DOORS does not overwrite the previous version. You can migrate or restore data from the previous version so that the data is available in the new version.

Before you begin

  • Before you migrate data, check the integrity of your existing data.
  • Be sure that all users log out of the database and then shut down the database server.
  • Back up your DOORS data. If you customized the menus in the existing installation, backup the addins.idx file and any custom scripts that you created.
  • You must be able to log in as the DOORS Administrator to migrate the data.

About this task

This procedure provides information for upgrading from DOORS version 6.0 SR1 or later. If you are using an earlier release, see upgrade documentation from previous releases.

On Windows systems, when you install DOORS 9.0 or later, these defaults apply:

  • DOORS installs to a new directory: <install_dir>\DOORS\9.version. Your previous client and database server are not overwritten; however, if you are upgrading DOORS client, you must uninstall your old client before you install the new client.
  • The DOORS database server port number is 36677. For your existing database server and a new version of the database server to run on the same computer, the new database server must run on a different port.
  • Other team members cannot use the upgraded version of DOORS until migration is completed.
There are two methods for upgrading data to your new installation:
  • When you install the database server, point to existing data. If you want to preserve the existing DOORS installation so that the data is available to existing clients, copy the data directory from the existing installation and point to the copy for the migration. If you do not want to migrate all the existing data, you can point to a copy of the data directory that contains only the items that you want to migrate. Then, use an upgraded client to migrate the data.
  • Restore data in the new installation from a project or module archive from a previous release. For more information, including the limitations of data archives, see Data backups and archives.

Procedure

  1. If you are upgrading the client, uninstall the previous client by using Windows Control Panel Programs and Features.
  2. Install a new version of release 9.
For information about installing the client and database server, see:
  3. If you customized the menus in the previous installation, stop the database server, copy the addins.idx file and any custom scripts and folders from your backup files and add them to the new installation. Then, restart the database server.
  4. To migrate your data, do one of the following steps:
    • If you pointed to an existing data directory when you installed the database server, log in to the upgraded client as Administrator and accept the option to migrate the data to the new installation.
    • If you have archives from a previous release, restore the data in the new installation.

What to do next

After the upgrade of the database server is complete, other team members can upgrade their DOORS client installation, as described in Installing the DOORS client.

The DOORS database server service is called DOORS DB Server 9.version. You can install multiple database server services on your computer. For more information, see Using the command line to install and remove DOORS database server services.
