Quick Start Guide

This guide provides information on installing and setting up IBM Sterling Control Center.

Product overview

IBM Sterling Control Center portfolio includes two products: IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor and IBM Sterling Control Center Director.

IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor is a centralized monitoring and management system that gives operations personnel the capability to continuously monitor business activities for the following server types across the enterprise: IBM Sterling Connect:Direct, IBM Sterling Connect:Direct File Agent, IBM Sterling Connect:Enterprise, IBM Sterling Connect:Express, IBM Sterling Secure Proxy, IBM MQ Managed File Transfer, IBM Sterling B2B Integrator and IBM Sterling File Gateway with IBM Global High Availability Mailbox, and many FTP servers.

IBM Sterling Control Center Director is a IBM Sterling Connect:Direct Server life cycle management system. Life cycle management includes: new Connect:Direct Server deployment, upgrade, and configuration management, and emergency restore.

Step 1: Access the software and documentation

Follow the instructions in the Downloading IBM Sterling Control Center V6.3.0 document.

This product offering includes the following items:
  • IBM Sterling Control Center V6.3.0 for IBM AIX, Linux, Windows installers.
  • IBM Sterling Control Center V6.3.0 documentation
  • IBM Sterling External Authentication Server V6.0.1
  • IBM DB2 Standard Server Edition V11.5 for IBM AIX, HP-UX, Linux, Windows

Step 2: Evaluate the hardware and system configuration requirements

See the Version 6.3.0 tab in the Detailed hardware and software requirements for IBM Control Center document. Check the IBM Sterling Control Center Monitor and Director v6.3.0 Release Notes for more information.

Step 3: Plan the implementation

Planning your implementation is an important part of the process. Consider the following levels of planning:
  • Implementation - How IBM Control Sterling Center is used in your enterprise environment and whether you require a high availability environment.
  • Environment - What databases, hardware, software, and engine sizing is required to handle the workload.
  • Objects - What objects must be set up and configured for IBM Sterling Control Center to accomplish the implementation.

Step 4: Install and configure a database

Install and configure a database. Supported databases are IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle. When upgrading IBM Sterling Control Center, verify in the Detailed hardware and software requirements that the versions of the database drivers are still supported by and compatible with IBM Sterling Control Center. Step 5: Estimate the workload

After you run the installer, verify that the event processors and databases can support and process the workload. See the Event Processor section and Planning section in the IBM Knowledge Center for information on determining event processor and database requirements for IBM Sterling Control Center.

Step 6: Install and Configure IBM Sterling Control Center

Install at least one IBM Sterling Center event processor, formerly known as the engine, or optionally install more for a high availability environment.

A high availability environment needs to have more than once instance of Control Center instance connecting to the same database. Before running the installer, read the installation instructions within the Installing section in the IBM Knowledge Center to ensure that you correctly install IBM Sterling Control Center for your planned implementation.

After installation is done, configure IBM Sterling Control Center using configCC script. After configuration is completed, start product using runEngine script.

Step 7: Log in to IBM Sterling Control Center

After Control Center is started, user can logon to IBM Sterling Control Center Web Console using the default user Id "admin".

Web Console can be accessed by entering http(s)://<host address>:<port> in a supported browser. From Web Console, Classic Console can be launched. Console users must have the proper administrative authority to add, monitor, and manage servers.

Step 8: Configure IBM Control Center to monitor and manage servers

Configure the IBM Sterling Control Center console for your business needs. For detailed information about configuring the servers and business events that you want IBM Sterling Control Center to monitor, review the Setting up and Configuration topics within the Configuring section in the IBM Knowledge Center.
