Installing Watson Text to Speech

Before you can use the Watson™ Text to Speech service, you must prepare the cluster to work with the service and then install the service on the cluster. You can also install the Watson Speech to Text service at the same time.

Before you begin

Ensure that you have the proper permissions on the cluster. As part of the installation procedure, you install IBM® Cloud Pak for Data. A project administrator can install Watson Text to Speech on IBM Cloud Pak for Data.

The Watson Speech services support single-zone OpenShift® deployments; they do not support multi-zone deployments. The Watson Speech services support multi-tenancy. You can install the services multiple times on the same cluster by installing them in separate namespaces (IBM Cloud Pak for Data deployments). You can install the services in separate projects, or install them once and provision multiple instances in the same project.

Before you install Watson Text to Speech, you must also install the Common core services and IBM Cloud Pak® foundational services. Watson Text to Speech uses the License Service from the IBM Cloud Pak foundational services, for which you need to take additional installation steps. Review Installing IBM Cloud Pak foundational services for more information about installing the License service.

As part of the installation, you specify the properties for installation and configuration of the service in the custom resource. The custom resource requires a limited number of properties, including the Speech services components to install. You can specify Watson Speech to Text, Watson Text to Speech, or both services. You can also specify many optional parameters to customize the installation and configuration for your environment and needs.

To install Watson Text to Speech, you must accept the product license terms. You are strongly encouraged to read the full terms of the license agreement. (The link requires you to leave the IBM web site.) For the installation to succeed, you must specify your acceptance of the license agreement in the custom resource.

Important: The Watson Speech to Text and Watson Text to Speech services share a common custom resource that allows you to install either or both of the services at the same time. The custom resource is a YAML-based specification that defines the properties that are used to install and configure the services. Because they share a common custom resource and other utilities and procedures, the term Speech services is used to refer to the combination of the two services.
