Backing up and restoring your deployment

IBM® Cloud Pak for Data provides two utilities to back up and restore your deployment.

OpenShift® APIs for Data Protection (OADP) backup and restore utility
The Cloud Pak for Data OADP backup and restore utility backs up the Kubernetes metadata and persistent volumes in a Cloud Pak for Data instance project (namespace).

The OADP backup and restore utility can restore an entire Cloud Pak for Data deployment to the same cluster or to a different cluster.

Note: The OADP backup and restore utility is not available on z/OS® systems.
Volume backup and restore utility
The Cloud Pak for Data volume backup and restore utility can create volume snapshots (Portworx only) and volume backups of the PersistentVolumeClaims (PVCs) of a set of projects.

The Cloud Pak for Data volume backup and restore utility restores only volume data, and only within the same Cloud Pak for Data instance. Kubernetes resources in the project must still exist.

The Cloud Pak for Data OADP backup and restore utility is the preferred utility to back up and restore your deployed services and their data. If any of your deployed services need an additional service-specific backup approach, see the documentation for those services. Refer to the Services that support backup and restore to see which backup and restore utility Cloud Pak for Data components and services support.
