IBM Workflow Process Service

Workflow Process Service is a new capability with a small footprint and resource usage for authoring and running workflows, which is offered only as part of IBM Cloud Pak® for Business Automation.

Workflow Process Service offers a fit for purpose, single runtime container that lets you split your workflow into separate runtime components.

Because Workflow Process Service has such a small footprint, you can use it to run just a single workflow solution in the context of a larger solution or as a runtime embedded in another product. It is a single container that can orchestrate and integrate with other microservices. Instead of a large centralized shared environment, you can have complete application isolation and upgrade, version, and tune Workflow Process Service independently of other applications.

The image shows three workflows running in a single shared workflow runtime versus each of the three workflows running in a different Workflow Process Service

With Workflow Process Service, you can achieve application isolation and colocation by running each workflow in a separate runtime component. With application isolation, you can optimize your solutions based on different criteria, such as throughput versus response time. You also have better control by managing security, privacy, and resilience per workflow, and benefit from seamless upgrades. With a shared environment, you can centrally manage your workflows and consistently apply security changes or upgrades at the same time.

Because workflow authoring is common between Workflow Process Service and IBM Business Automation Workflow, you can apply the skills and artifacts across both products, and easily add other workflow capabilities to meet the growing needs of your business.
