Install Rational ClearCase clients and servers

The method that is used to install IBM® Rational® ClearCase® depends on the target platform and on your installation strategy.

Before you install ClearCase client and servers, make sure that you are prepared:

Plan the installation: Complete prerequisite tasks, select an installation strategy, and review the processes that are required to complete the installation. See Enterprise software installation strategies.
Understand how to install and use IBM technologies for product installation. See Use IBM installation and packaging utilities.

The following table helps you plan all the requirements and configuration for installing Rational ClearCase.

For Linux or the UNIX systems: Set the umask so users who do not have root permission can use the product. Complete this step before you install or upgrade your product. For Linux™ systems: Increase the number of file handles before you install or upgrade Rational ClearCase	Client Server	Increasing the number of file handles on Linux workstations	On most Linux computers, the default file handle setting can be too low for obtaining best results with Rational products. Check the setting and adjust it if required. CAUTION: Setting limits too high can affect system-wide performance.
After you download the product installation files with IBM Passport Advantage®, verify the download and extract the electronic image	Client Server	Verifying and extracting electronic images	If you download the installation files from IBM Passport Advantage, you must extract the electronic image from the compressed files before you can install the product. Note: You must have an IBM Passport Advantage user ID with entitlement to download the product files. The download operation is often completed by administrators who then make the extracted files available to users for installation.
Use the IBM Packaging Utility if you want to install multiple Rational products in the same repository		IBM Packaging Utility	You can use the Packaging Utility to complete the following tasks: Generate a new repository for packages Copy packages to a new repository Delete packages that are no longer needed
For Windows systems: Determine a path for package groups and shared resources that allows users who do not have Administrator privileges to use the product	Client Server	User privilege requirements for installing the product	To enable users without Administrator authority to work with the product, do not use the C:\Program Files directory path for package groups or shared resources.
Install and manage IBM Installation Manager	Client Server	IBM Installation Manager tasks	Information for installing and managing Installation Manager on Windows, Linux and the UNIX systems. If you install by using a silent response file, Installation Manager is installed automatically.

Optional. Install ClearCase integration with Cadence Virtuoso	Client	Integrating Rational ClearCase with Cadence Virtuoso	Optional feature that allows custom chip designers to complete ClearCase actions while in Cadence Virtuoso.
Optional. For Linux and Solaris systems: Configure automounting of VOBs	Client Server	Automounting VOBs	Beginning with version 9.0.1.5 of ClearCase, you can configure the automounting of VOBs.
