IBM Case Manager architecture overview
You can install IBM® Case Manager on either a single system that FileNet® P8 is also installed on or in a distributed environment where IBM Case Manager is on a separate system than FileNet P8.
IBM Case Manager is deployed in an application server, and uses FileNet P8 to access and store content and solution assets. The IBM Case Manager administration client and Case Manager Client work in an IBM Content Navigator environment. The lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) is used for user access and authorization.
In the development environment, Workplace XT enables access to Process Designer for workflow design capabilities. In the production environment, Workplace XT is not required unless you are using form policy templates in your solutions. Similarly, Case Manager Builder is used in a development environment but not in a production environment.
Typically, the business analyst designs, builds, and tests a solutions in the development environment. When the solution is ready to be deployed to production, the solution is migrated to the production environment, which should be in a separate FileNet P8 domain.
You use the IBM Case Manager administration client to migrate your solutions from domain to domain. If your solutions contain non-case management assets, you must use FileNet Deployment Manager and other tools to move the additional assets.
The Case Manager Client serves as the user interface that case workers use to complete cases for the solution.
Users access Case Manager Builder, the IBM Case Manager administration client, and Case Manager Client from a web browser.
IBM Case Manager can also integrate with IBM Business Process Manager to complete case tasks and IBM Cognos® Real-time Monitoring or IBM Watson Content Analytics to create active and historical analytic dashboards for your case management.
Single-system architecture
IBM Case Manager provides an installation framework where you can install all of the components, including product prerequisites such as FileNet P8, DB2®, and WebSphere® Application Server, on the same system.
The single-system architecture for IBM Case Manager is ideal for development environments, demonstration environments, or production environments for small businesses that do not require high availability and disaster recovery. When you use a single-system architecture for a production environment, Content Platform Engine should be in a separate application server profile from the application server profile that contains IBM Case Manager and IBM Content Navigator.
For a single-system architecture, IBM Case Manager Platform Installation tool can install only DB2 as the database and Tivoli® Directory Server as the LDAP server.
The following graphic shows the typical architecture of IBM Case Manager on a single server.
Distributed system architecture
You can also install IBM Case Manager in a distributed architecture where IBM Case Manager is installed on a separate system from FileNet P8. The IBM Case Manager installation program installs Case Manager Builder, Case Manager Client, the IBM Case Manager configuration tool, the IBM Case Manager administration client, and the IBM Case Manager API.
For a distributed system architecture, IBM Case Manager can use either DB2, Oracle, or SQL Server as the database and any LDAP server that FileNet P8 supports.
The following graphic shows the typical architecture of IBM Case Manager in a distributed development environment and the features that IBM Case Manager can integrate with.
When you configure FileNet P8 to work with IBM Case Manager, you must configure each target object store to work with a single workflow region, and the workflow region must point to a single target object store.
