Cell definition basics

The Environment wizard creates a cell definition in the environment tree that is used to manage a WebSphere® cell in your environment. You can create a cell definition for an existing cell or for a new cell that you want to create.

The environment tree (RAFW_HOME/user/environments) contains cell definitions grouped by environment.

A cell definition:
  • includes property files that describe the WebSphere cell
  • represents the structure of a WebSphere cell that you want to manage

The Environment wizard sets property values in its property files based on your answers to wizard questions.

If the cell exists already in WebSphere, you select the Read an Existing Cell Configuration path. See Environment wizard checklist for an existing WebSphere cell. The existing cell Environment wizard path supports the following automation targets: WebSphere Application Server, IBM® HTTP Server, and WebSphere Portal.

If the cell does not already exist in WebSphere, you can select the Create a New WebSphere Cell path. The new cell Environment wizard path supports all automation targets. See Environment wizard checklists for a new WebSphere cell.
