Applying an OS update to compute nodes

To apply an update, such as a security or maintenance fix, to existing or new compute nodes, apply an OS update to the affected compute nodes.

Before you begin

If you are applying an OS update in IBM® Spectrum Cluster Foundation Community Edition, make sure that the compute nodes are not part of a cluster. Only compute nodes that do no belong to a cluster can be updated.

To verify if a node belongs to a cluster, log in to the Web Portal. Go to the Resources tab, and click Infrastructure > Nodes. Find and select the node from the list. Once selected, view the node details in the bottom summary pane. Specifically, the Cluster Name field is blank if the node does not belong to a cluster.

About this task

For existing compute nodes, add an OS update to an image profile that was used to provision the affected compute nodes. For new compute nodes, add the OS update when you create a new image profile, or to an existing image profile. For more information about OS updates, see OS updates.

Procedure

  1. Add an OS update to the IBM Spectrum Cluster Foundation Community Edition Web Portal. OS updates can be created from locally installed files or downloaded from official channels.
  2. Apply an OS update to existing compute nodes.
    1. Modify the image profile that is used to provision the compute nodes that you want to update. The image profile that is modified cannot be used by any servers in any clusters. For more information about adding an OS update to an existing image profile, see Adding OS updates.
    2. Synchronize your changes to the image profile across all compute nodes. Refer to Synchronizing nodes.
    3. Some nodes require a manual reboot to make sure that all changes were applied. Reboot the affected compute nodes.
  3. Apply an OS update to new compute nodes.
    1. Create an image profile. Make sure to specify the OS update in the Packages tab of the image profile.
    2. Add the image profile to the provisioning template that you use to provision the new compute nodes. You can either create a new provisioning template or use an existing provisioning template. For more information about creating a provisioning template, see Adding a provisioning template.
    3. Use the provisioning template to provision the new compute nodes. Refer to Adding compute nodes to a system.

Results

The OS update is applied to all the compute nodes that use the updated image profile for provisioning.
