Removing a PCIe adapter from the 8247-42L, 8286-41A, or 8286-42A system with the power turned off

Learn how to remove the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express (PCIe) adapters from the system with the system power turned off.

To complete this procedure, you must have prepared the system to remove and replace a PCIe adapter. For instructions, see Preparing the 8247-42L, 8286-41A, or 8286-42A system to remove and replace a PCIe adapter with the power turned off.

To remove a PCIe adapter from the system, complete the steps in this procedure.

  1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap on and that the ESD clip is connected to an unpainted metal surface. If not, do so now.
  2. To set the adapter latch (A) at the target slot into the open position, rotate the latch (A) on the rear of the system, in the direction shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4.
  3. If you are removing the PCIe gen3 x16 GPU adapter (FC EC47 or EC4B), disconnect the auxiliary power cable (A) from its connectors on the system backplane, as shown in Figure 1.

  4. If you are removing the PCIe gen3 x16 GPU adapter (FC EC47 or EC4B), complete the following steps:
    1. Unlock the air baffle latch (B) by pulling it up from its position.
    2. Carefully grasp the adapter tailstock and then pull out the adapter from its slot, as shown in Figure 2.
If you are removing any other adapter, go to the next step.

  5. Carefully grasp the adapter (B) by its top edge or tailstock, and remove the adapter from the slot, as shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4.
Attention: A pin on the tailstock of the adapter resembles a removable screw. Do not remove this pin. It is required for correct alignment and seating.

  6. Place the removed adapter on an approved ESD surface.
  7. Choose your next action from the following options:
    • If you are removing a PCIe adapter as part of another procedure, return to that procedure.
    • If you are replacing the failed adapter with a new one, go to the procedure for replacing a PCIe adapter.
    • If you are not replacing with a new adapter, you must install a PCIe tailstock filler in the empty slot. To install a PCIe tailstock filler, complete the following steps:
      1. Carefully grasp the filler tailstock and align the filler with the slot and its connector on the system backplane, as shown in Figure 5 and Figure 6.
      2. Press the filler tailstock firmly into the slot.
