Developing test cases

In the following topics you will see how to work with test cases - create, add new, and import test cases.

Creating test cases
You can create a test case to describe what you are going to test, define preconditions and post-conditions, assign test steps, and record the results of running the test case.
Importing test cases
You can import test cases that are saved as local XML files directly into your repository, where they are then available on the Browse Test Cases page.
Adding new test cases to test plans
As an alternative to creating independent test cases, you can create new test cases in the context of an existing test plan. A test plan describes the scope of the overall test effort and provides a record of the test planning process. Test plans also allow you to manage other test artifacts, such as test cases and requirements.
Adding existing test cases to test plans
You can add any existing test cases to a test plan.
Adding existing test scripts to test cases
When you add an existing test script to a test case, it is listed in the Test Scripts section of the test case.
Adding new test scripts to test cases
In the Test Scripts section of a test case, you can create a new test script and associate it with the test case.
Estimating the weight of individual test cases
You can provide a more detailed estimate of the test execution effort by adding a weight value to each test case. Test case execution records inherit the weight of their associated test case.
Linking test cases to development work items
If your team has set up an integration with Rational® Team Concert® version 2.x or the Engineering Workflow Management application, you can link your test cases to development work items. As such, you can set up a mapping between a feature that a developer is working on and your test case.
Linking test cases to architecture elements
In IBM® Engineering Test Management, you can create, view, and link to architecture elements that are stored in an Architecture Management application such as IBM Engineering Systems Design Rhapsody® - Model Manager. In the test case editor, you can view architecture elements that are linked to test cases.
Linking and managing requirements
In the application, you can link test cases with requirements in the Requirements Management application. This section describes how to manage test cases and requirements artifacts.
Discovering and updating suspect test cases
You can automatically discover whether test cases in your test plan are linked to requirements that have changed and that are causing the suspect status to be marked as Suspect. Then, you can review the linked requirements that contribute to the suspect status to determine whether the associated test cases require updates.
Configuring data record selection criteria in test cases
Test scripts can have test data. You can define the selection criteria for data records that are provided by the test scripts associated with a test case. Selection criteria that you define at the test case level overrides the selection criteria which has been defined at the test script level.
