Preventing broken links in Microsoft Word documents

If your Microsoft Word document contains links to other files, moving it to a different computer invalidates the linked information. To make the document-style report self-contained, remove the links from the document-style report.

Procedure

  • To remove links from Microsoft Word 2010, 2013, or 2016 documents:
    1. Click the File tab, and then Info > Edit links to files. This menu entry is available only if your document-style report contains linked data.
    2. Select a link and click Break link.
  • To remove links from Microsoft Word 2007 documents:
    1. Click the Microsoft Office icon, and then Prepare > Edit links to files. This menu entry is available only if your document-style report contains linked data.
    2. Select a link and click Break link.
  • To remove links from Microsoft Word 2003 documents:
    1. Click Edit > Links.
    2. Click Break link.
