Installing the external SAS port in the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D system

Use this procedure to install an external SAS port as a part of upgrading your disk drive backplane.

If you want to replace a failed SAS port, see Replacing the external SAS port in the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D system. Complete the tasks in this procedure to install an SAS port in the system.

Complete the following steps to connect the SAS cable to the external SAS connection port on the system backplane:

  1. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  2. Identify the system that you will be working on by turning on the system identify (blue) LED. For instructions, see Control panel LEDs and enabling enclosure indicators.
  3. Stop the system or logical partition. For instructions, see Stopping the system or logical partition.
  4. Disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the system. For instructions, see Disconnecting the power cords from the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D
Note: This system might be equipped with a second power supply. Disconnect it before continuing with this procedure. Ensure that the power source to the system has been completely disconnected.

  5. Attach a wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  6. Remove the front cover:
  7. For a rack-mounted system, place the system into the service position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D system in the service position.
  8. Remove the service access cover:
  9. Disconnect all PCI adapters that are connected to the system. For instructions, see Removing a PCI adapter.
  10. If you are installing the external SAS port into a new system, remove the filler from the external SAS connection port on the disk drive backplane.
  11. Insert the SAS cable's keyed slot into the standoff on the server's side frame (C) as shown in Figure 1.
  12. Connect the SAS shroud of the SAS cable (A) to the external SAS connection port on the system backplane, at the rear of the system, until it snaps in place, as shown in Figure 1.
  13. Lay the cable beside the side wall, and slide the cable through the center brace (B), towards the SAS connection port on the disk drive backplane.
  14. Remove or slide the tape drive out slightly to gain access to the SAS connection port.
  15. If present, remove the protection cover from the disk drive backplane. Then, push the SAS shroud (D) into the SAS connection port on the disk drive backplane until it snaps in place.

  16. Replace the tape drive if you removed it.
  17. Replace all PCI adapters. For instructions, see Replacing a PCI adapter.
  18. Replace the service access cover:
  19. For a rack-mounted system, place the system into the operating position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D system into the operating position.
  20. Replace the front cover:
  21. Connect the power source to the system by plugging the power cords. For instructions, see Connecting the power cords.
  22. Start the system or logical partition. For instructions, see Starting the system or logical partition.
  23. Verify the installed part:
    • If you replaced the part because of a failure, verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying a repair.
    • If you installed the part for any other reason, verify the installed part. For instructions, see Verifying the installed part.
You can now attach other supported SAS features to the system.
