Preparing the 9080-MHE, 9080-MME, 9119-MHE, or 9119-MME system to install a PCIe adapter with the system power turned on in AIX

Learn about steps you must complete before you install the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express (PCIe) adapters in the system.

To prepare the system to install a PCIe adapter in the system, complete the following steps:
  1. Determine the slot in which you want to install a PCIe adapter. The PCIe adapter slots are at the rear of a system. Figure 1 shows the PCIe adapter location codes.
Note: Eight PCIe slots are available in the system. PCIe adapters are installed in low-profile, gen3, double-wide, blind-swap cassettes. The PCIe adapter cassettes are installed in the slots in the system. For the PCIe adapter placement information about the available slots in this system, see PCIe adapter placement rules and slot priorities for the 9080-MHE, 9080-MME, 9119-MHE, or 9119-MME.

  2. Take appropriate precautions for avoiding electric shock and for handling static-sensitive devices. For information, see Avoiding electric shock and Handling static-sensitive devices.
  3. Use a console to access the PCI Hot Plug Manager.

To access the PCI Hot Plug Manager, complete the following steps:

    1. Log in as root user.
    2. At the command line, type smitty.
    3. Select Devices.
    4. Select PCI Hot Plug Manager and press Enter.

The PCI Hot-Plug Manager menu displays.

For details about the menu options in the PCI Hot-Plug Manager screen, see PCI hot-plug manager menu.

  4. From the PCI Hot-Plug Manager menu, select Add a PCI Hot-Plug Adapter, and then press Enter.

The Add a Hot-Plug Adapter window displays.

  5. Select the appropriate PCIe slot from the list that is displayed on the screen, and then press Enter.
  6. Open the rack door at the rear of the system.
  7. Attach the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap.
    Attention:
    • Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap to the front ESD jack, to the rear ESD jack, or to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent the electrostatic discharge from damaging your hardware.
    • When you use an ESD wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. An ESD wrist strap is used for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have an ESD wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  8. To remove the PCIe adapter cassette from the selected slot, complete the following steps:
    1. Label and disconnect all cables that are attached to the adapter you are removing.
    2. Rotate the terracotta cassette handle (A) in the direction that is shown in Figure 2 and then press down on the handle (A) to disengage the cassette from the slot connectors.

    3. Holding the cassette by its edge, pull out the cassette from the slot.
  9. Place the cassette with the cover facing up on an approved electrostatic discharge (ESD) surface.
  10. Remove the cassette cover by completing the following steps:
    1. Press the terracotta button on the cassette cover as shown in Figure 3 to disengage the cover from the cassette.
    2. Slide the cover off from the cassette.

  11. To remove the PCIe filler from the cassette, follow the instructions that are shown as images on the cassette. You can also continue to use the following steps to remove the PCIe filler from the cassette.
  12. Remove the PCIe filler from the cassette by completing the following steps:
    1. Unlock both the cassette ratchets by rotating them, as shown in Figure 4.
    2. Push up the cassette ratchets to the top edge of the cassette, as shown in Figure 4.

Note: The edge of the adapter that is located at the end of the cassette that contains the cassette latch is called the adapter tailstock.
    3. To unlock the filler tailstock, rotate the latch that is located at the tailstock end of the cassette as shown in Figure 5 .
    4. Remove the filler tailstock from the cassette, as shown in Figure 5.
