Detailed Description
New Release of IBM Tools for Developers for i5/OS (formerly
IBM e(logo)Server iSeries Tools for Developers).
OVERVIEW:
IBM Tools for Developers for i5/OS contains tools that
help to develop, build, and port i5/OS applications.
This release contains updated tools and utilities to
aid the i5/OS developer.
This product is designed to improve and enhance the i5/OS
application development environment by providing a wide array
of tools to aid in the development, building, and porting of
i5/OS applications. This release of the Tools for Developers
for i5/OS product updates some of the tools to newer releases
and enables the product to be compatible with current and future
i5/OS releases. Additionally, the performance of the VNC tools
is significantly improved.
The tools come from a variety of sources. Some tools may be
familiar to developers since they were ported from other platforms,
while other tools are relatively new and are i5/OS specific.
This product takes advantage of the different environments found on
the System i server, mainly the command line, Qshell, and the i5/OS
Portable Application Solutions Environment (i5/OS PASE). Developers
who are accustomed to working in a certain environment can
remain in that environment when using this product, while taking
advantage of the tools and features from the other environments.

IBM tools for Developers for IBM i (5799-PTL) was a PRPQ product
that contained various tools that aid in the development, building,
and porting of IBM i applications. This product was designed to
improve and enhance the IBM i development environment by providing a
wide array of tools to aid in development, building, and porting of
IBM i applications. New, existing, and enhanced tools are included
that enable a developer to take advantage of IBM i development
capabilities.
The two most significant offerings are:

Prerequisites:
-- i5/OS V5R4M0 or later
-- i5/OS PASE, option 33 of the Operating System (SS1), must be
installed in order to use some of the tools
Limitations: This product takes advantage of i5/OS PASE, option 33
of the Operating System, which allows AIX(R) applications to run
in i5/OS. By utilizing this functionality, some of the
tools have a GUI. However, to take advantage of the GUI, X-windowing
capability is required. X-windows can be made available by
utilizing Virtual Network Computing (VNC), which is shipped as
part of Tools for Developers for i5/OS. The VNC utility contains an
X-server which runs on i5/OS. The images are rendered
and sent to a client to be viewed. Running VNC is not necessary if
your client is already running X-window software.
Not every tool is available or practical to use in a command line,
Qshell, or i5/OS PASE environment.
