We are happy to announce the general availability of Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud on the latest IBM Cloud VPC Gen2 infrastructure.

The Kubernetes Service will be available in US South, US East, London, and Frankfurt MZRs (multi-zone regions). 

What is IBM Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)?

IBM Cloud continues to invest in new VPC capabilities, bringing industry-leading technology in this generation of IBM Cloud infrastructure. VPC provides simplified networking, security, scalability, flexibility, and agility for users running workloads in IBM Cloud. IBM Cloud Virtual Servers for VPC (Gen2) now deliver network performance up to 80Gbps, which means our clients can push far more data in far less time. It’s more bandwidth for applications on a superior public platform. Learn more about VPC here.

What is Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud?

Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud launched August 1, 2019, and is a managed service that simplifies deployment and configuration of OpenShift Container Platform 3.11. On April 24, 2020, IBM was the first managed service to add support for OpenShift Container Platform 4.3

As a managed service, IBM will automate initial provisioning and on-going maintenance, including operating system patches, vulnerability remediation, and any updates in the OpenShift stack. Lifecycle management is only one aspect of a managed OpenShift offering, however. Another key aspect is building in operational efficiencies so you can deliver line of business objectives. We do that by supporting highly available (HA) master nodes in a multizone cluster configuration. This ensures that master and worker nodes are distributed evenly across at least three physically separate data centers (i.e., zones) within that region. Managed OpenShift supports your most critical workloads by providing an SLA of 99.99% on a variety of compute isolation choices, including bare metal. Managed OpenShift also supports your regulated workloads with compliance including PCI, HIPAA-ready, ISO, SOC1 Type 2, SOC2 Type 2, and SOC3. 

How do I bring managed OpenShift to VPC?

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Log into IBM Cloud.
  2. Create your Virtual Private Cloud using these instructions.
  3.  

  4. Under Select an environment, choose VPC infrastructure. Now you will see your existing Virtual Private Cloud instances. Configure the cluster name, tags, and geography as normal. You will also see the existing subnets created under your VPC instance. Note: Make sure you select the geography where the VPC was created:
  5. Select the worker node flavors for your default pool and the number of nodes per zone, then click Create cluster and get ready to use the OpenShift Service on VPC:
  6. Keep playing with your managed OpenShift cluster by deploying a starter kit app.
