In an increasingly complex hybrid, multicloud world, enterprises are looking for a clear and straightforward path to transform their operations without reinventing the wheel.

Today, at VMworld Europe 2019, IBM Cloud and HCL Technologies (HCL) announced a collaboration that will help enterprises achieve these goals and more. With the new IBM Cloud and HCL partnership you can do the following:

  • Accelerate complex and business-critical workload migration to the IBM Cloud.
  • Help transform and modernize VMware applications with Kubernetes and containers, leveraging Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud.
  • Advance SAP on VMware application services in the IBM Cloud to enable comprehensive managed services for Day 2 operations.

IBM Cloud and HCL bring together a unique approach to running VMware workloads in the cloud

IBM’s secured, enterprise grade public cloud combined with HCL’s delivery and managed services expertise will provide a framework for complex VMware workloads to be moved, managed, and modernized in the cloud.  

HCL’s VelocITy framework provides the people, processes, and technology to deliver faster deployment timelines and migration, and it is designed to lower the total cost of ownership (TCO). HCL has 6,000 VMware-certified professionals, including 2,000 with deep VMware technology stack and ecosystem skills. HCL also has deep domain expertise in application modernization and a broad range of cloud native services.

IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions features a hardened design with secured, enterprise grade features like highest level of key management encryption, support for client compliance with data sovereignty regulations activities, different consumption models (shared and dedicated), and a well-established ecosystem of third-party services for backup, disaster recovery, security, etc.

With this partnership, HCL can better leverage IBM Cloud’s automated VMware solution stack providing the following benefits to mutual clients:

  • Migration services leveraging VMware HCX technology
  • Backup and disaster recovery services leveraging Veeam and Zerto
  • Security services leveraging a rich set of add-on automated services, such as HyTrust, Caveonix, Fortinet, F5, and additional IBM security solutions
  • Transform and modernize VMware applications by containerizing components with Kubernetes and PaaS microservices while leveraging Red Hat OpenShift automation and integration
  • Enable industry-leading services and solutions for managing SAP workloads running on SAP-certified infrastructure for VMware workloads

A lower-cost, global network

With this new collaboration, HCL will have access to a global network of 35+ IBM data centers for VMware workloads with unmetered data transfer costs within the IBM private network. Combining HCL delivery expertise and IBM public cloud’s enterprise grade infrastructure translates to lower TCO and enhanced ROI for target areas like disaster recovery and backup.

Ajay Patel, VMware’s senior vice president and general manager, cloud provider software business unit, recently put it this way, “This is exciting news for HCL clients, as they can now benefit from VMware’s consistent infrastructure and operations to seamlessly migrate to IBM Cloud. VMware, HCL, and IBM will offer clients the fastest and least-expensive path to the cloud by eliminating the need to refactor applications. Once in IBM Cloud, HCL clients are able to leverage the same infrastructure, teams, skills, and tools that they have invested in for years while modernizing their applications with new cloud native capabilities.”

For HCL and its customers, IBM becomes the single point of contact for IBM Cloud and VMware support, significantly increasing the ease of doing business for enterprise workloads. HCL will be able to rapidly bring on business-critical workloads for its customers with the highest requirements around data loss prevention and availability by leveraging the IBM Cloud.
