Developers een wereldpodium bieden

Een wereldpodium voor z’n toepassing, elke ontwikkelaar en startup droomt ervan. IBM en KPN helpen een handje. Tijdens een wereldwijde developer challenge leveren zij de technologie en api’s op basis waarvan slimme mensen en bedrijven aan de slag kunnen. De beste inzenders worden gepresenteerd tijdens het 4YFN event, dat plaatsvindt tegelijkertijd met het Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Hiermee komt de interesse van topinvesteerders en nieuwe klanten binnen handbereik.

4 Years From Now, kortweg 4YFN, is een nieuw platform voor startups dat voorziet in langdurige connecties tussen startende ondernemingen, ontwikkelaars en grote organisaties. Dit vanuit het besef dat startups de drijvende kracht zijn achter veranderingen op het gebied van economie, technologie en samenleving. 4YFN is een initiatief van het Mobile World Congress, dat elk jaar in februari in Barcelona plaatsvindt. “Het heeft zich in korte tijd ontwikkeld tot een community van mensen en organisaties die nadenken over de toekomst en samen wat stippen op de horizon zetten”, aldus cloudspecialist Maarten Boerma van IBM.

Het 4YFN-initiatief sluit volgens hem naadloos aan op de stappen die IBM zelf zet om ontwikkelaars en jonge bedrijven te stimuleren en ondersteunen. “In vijf steden over de hele wereld zetten we vergelijkbare community’s op en organiseren we een challenge (Global Mobile Innovators Tournament), waarbij we developers toegang geven tot ons Bluemix-ontwikkelplatform. Op basis van api’s van telecomproviders stellen we hen in staat met nieuwe, creatieve oplossingen te komen, bijvoorbeeld op het terrein van internet of things (IoT). In Nederland doen we dat samen met IT- en telecomleverancier KPN.”

Ontdekken
Voor KPN vormt de input vanuit ontwikkelaars een tevens welkome input voor de eigen technologie- en businessroadmap. Melvyn Verzaal, verantwoordelijk voor portfolio en partners op het gebied van IoT bij KPN: “Door mensen met onze api’s aan de slag te laten gaan, kunnen we op een natuurlijke manier ontdekken wat de gewenste nieuwe diensten zijn, die we eventueel met derde partijen op de markt kunnen zetten. De kennis en ervaring die we hiermee opdoen, kunnen we eveneens gebruiken voor onze eigen ontwikkeling.”

Dergelijke initiatieven zijn de manier om de beloftes van technologieën als cloud, big data en IoT in de praktijk te brengen, zo stelt hij. “We werken daarbij volgens het motto ‘think big, act small’. Hackatons en co-creatie en innovatiewedstrijden zijn daarbij bij uitstek de mogelijkheden om dit te propageren. Samen met ontwikkelaars maken we de wereld steeds een stukje mooier.”

Rondom 4YFN zijn dit jaar drie thema’s geformuleerd, die allemaal iets te maken hebben met slimme vormen van connectiviteit: ‘smart home’, ‘connected travel & transport’ en ‘smarter healthcare’. Het doel is volgens de heren het ontwikkelen van ‘microservices’, die inspelen op een behoefte en specifieke kennis op één van de drie domeinen vereisen die zowel KPN als IBM ontbeert. Denk aan het monitoren van chronische patiënten door middel van wearables, het meten en regelen van de hygiëne in het ziekenhuis, het slim inrichten van een veiliger huis, het kunnen traceren van huisdieren, het intelligenter routeren van logistieke verkeer en makkelijker parkeren in de grote stad. “Technologie kan een oplossing zijn voor heel veel verschillende uitdagingen”, aldus Verzaal.

Aanmelden
Inmiddels heeft IBM in Nederland al een kleine 200 registraties binnen. Deze individuen of bedrijven melden zich daartoe aan op het cloudgebaseerde Bluemix-ontwikkelplatform van IBM, alwaar ze toegang hebben tot de KPN-api’s, herbruikbare applicaties van anderen en de benodigde connectiviteit. Vervolgens kunnen ze aan de slag. Bluemix biedt daartoe DevOps in een open, geïntegreerde en schaalbare ontwikkelomgeving. DevOps, dat ontwikkeling en operatie combineert, helpt ontwikkelaars sneller en efficiënter applicaties te bouwen die geschikt zijn voor de cloud. Boerma: “Met Bluemix kan in principe alles. Die onbegrensde mogelijkheden om businessoplossingen te bouwen koppelen we nu aan api’s en technologie van KPN, zoals LoRa: het mobiele netwerk voor IoT.”

Gebruik van standaard componenten in combinatie met cloud en connectiviteit staan centraal in de 4YFN-uitdaging: apparaten, connectiviteit, informatiestromen en andere applicaties. Verzaal: “Zie het als een trechter: je begint met een idee, je gebruikt de benodigde componenten en bouwt een prototype om te bewijzen dat je applicatie waarde oplevert. Vervolgens breng je alles naar productie, waarbij KPN en IBM een belangrijke rol kunnen spelen bij het nagenoeg onbeperkt opschalen.”

Inspiratie
Een van de zaken die de 4YFN-uitdaging zo interessant maken, is dat ontwikkelaars en startups eenmaal aangemeld terecht komen binnen een omgeving die bol staat van de innovatie. Boerma: “Binnen Bluemix zien ze uiteenlopende api’s naar twitter, weather channel en andere online services. We bieden diverse vormen van connectiviteit, maar bijvoorbeeld ook cognitieve computing middels IBM Watson. Ook al had je zelf ideeën voor een nieuwe service, op basis van de dingen die er al zijn kun je deze enorm verrijken.”

Hiermee zijn zoals gesteld microservices te bouwen die precies beantwoorden aan de vraag en verwachtingen van consumenten, patiënten, huiseigenaren of organisaties. “Het mes snijdt in dit geval aan vier kanten: IBM, KPN, de ontwikkelaars en de eindgebruiker”, zegt Melvyn Verzaal. Maarten Boerma vult aan: “Binnen deze wisselwerking, gecombineerd met het wereldpodium dat 4YFN biedt, kunnen we helpen om goede ideeën te pitchen en deze sneller, beter en groter op de markt te zetten. Want in de nieuwe wereld geldt dat wie een idee als eerste snel schaalbaar in de praktijk brengt, een duidelijke voorsprong neemt op de concurrentie.”

Offering developers a worldwide platform

The Global Mobile Innovators Tournament – a worldwide platform for his or her application: a dream for every developer and startup. IBM and KPN are reaching out to help. They will provide the technology and API´s during a worldwide developer challenge that will enable smart people and companies to start developing. The best solutions will be presented at 4YFN 2016 which takes place in Barcelona, Spain, simultaneously with the Mobile World Congress next February, where it will raise the interest of top investors and new clients.

Four Years From Now, in short: 4YFN, is a new platform for startups that meets the need for long term connections between starting organizations, developers and large enterprises, realizing that startups are the driving force behind many economical, technological and societal changes. 4YFN is linked to the Mobile World Congress, taking place each year in Barcelona. “It has rapidly developed into a community of people and organizations that think about the future possibilities, putting dots on the horizon”, says cloud specialist Maarten Boerma of IBM.

“4YFN integrated perfectly with the initiatives taken by IBM to stimulate and support developers and young entrepreneurs. “We are currently building similar communities around the world, by organizing a challenge (Global Mobile Innovators Tournament), where we give developers access to our Bluemix-development platform. With the help of API´s provided by telecom providers from around the world we enable them to build new, creative solutions, for instance with regards to the Internet of Things (IoT) and in the Netherlands, we´re working together with KPN on this.”

Discover
For KPN, the developers input also serves their own technology and business roadmap. Melvyn Verzaal, who is responsible for the IoT portfolio and involved partner network at KPN explains: “By offering our API´s to developers, we can discover relevant services that we can jointly develop and market with third parties. We can also use the experience and knowledge we get from this for our own portfolio development.”

These kind of initiatives are helping in the realization of the possibilities that arise with new technologies such as Cloud, Big Data and the Internet of Things. “Our motto is: think big, act small. Hackathons and co-creations, as well as innovation challenges offer the perfect setting to realize this. With developers we are jointly working on a better world.”

The Global Mobile Innovators Tournament revolves around 3 themes that all relate to smart forms of connectivity: ´smart homes and buildings´, ´connected travel and transportation´ and ´smarter healthcare´. The goal is to develop so called ´micro services´, which meet a certain demand and knowledge on one of the three domains that IBM and KPN don´t have. Monitoring chronic patients with wearables, measuring hygiene standards in a hospital, safely building a smart home, tracing animals, intelligently routing traffic or smart city parking are just some of the examples developers could think of. “Technology could serve as a solution for many different challenges”, says Verzaal.

Register
More than 900 developers have already registered for the Tournament, 200 of which have shown particular interest in leveraging the KPN APIs on Bluemix. These individuals or companies will be registering on the cloud based IBM Bluemix-platform which gives them access to the KPN APIs and all sorts of development tools, re-usable applications and required connectivity, with which they can build their IoT app of the future. Bluemix offers them DevOps in an open integrated and scalable development suite, which combines development with operations and helps developers to more rapidly and efficiently build cloud ready applications. Boerma: “Bluemix has endless possibilities. During this challenge we´re connecting the enablement of building business solutions to the API´s and technology base of KPN, such as LoRa which is KPN´s mobile network for IoT.”

Using standard components combined with cloud and connectivity form the base of this Tournament. Verzaal: “It´s a funnel. You start with an idea, use needed components and then build a prototype to prove the relevancy of your applications. Next step is production, where KPN and IBM can help to scale up unlimitedly.”

Inspired
One of the things that make the Global Mobile Innovators Tournament interesting, is the innovative environment developers and startups enter then they register for the challenge. Boerma: “Within Bluemix we have several APIs connecting to Twitter, the Weather Channel and other online services and we offer several forms of connectivity, as well as cognitive computing capabilities such as IBM Watson. With all this, you can enrich your own idea for a new service enormously.”

A said before, this enables developers to build micro services that perfectly meet the demands of consumers, patients, homeowners and companies. “The knife actually cuts four ways: for IBM, KPN, the developer and finally the end user”, says Melvyn Verzaal. Maarten Boerma adds: “Adding the world stage of 4YFN 2016 to all of this, we enable developers to pitch good ideas better while speeding up the go to market process. The rule of thumb in this new world is: whoever is able to roll out and scale up fast, will leave the competition behind flabbergasted.”
