IBM aan wieg lasertechnologie

IBM viert dit jaar haar honderdjarig bestaan. Een mooie gelegenheid om stil te staan bij een aantal bijzondere mijlpalen. Op de IBM100 website verschijnen wekelijks nieuwe highlights en zo ontstaat een beeld van IBM als vernieuwer op een breed technologisch terrein. Wat maar weinig mensen weten, is dat IBM aan de wieg stond van de lasertechnologie. Begin jaren tachtig gebruikten drie IBM wetenschappers de Excimer Lasertechnologie voor het etsen van computerchips. Tijdens hun onderzoek ontdekten zij dat de laser weefsels kan verwijderen zonder de omringende materie te beschadigen. Tegenwoordig wordt de technologie grootschalig toegepast voor oogcorrecties.
