Gaat de IBM Watson computer de Jeopardy Kennisquiz winnen?

In 1997 schreef IBM geschiedenis door met de Deep Blue computer de beste schaker van de wereld Gary Kasparov te verslaan. Deze week zijn alle ogen gericht op de IBM Watson computer die het opneemt tegen twee doorgewinterde tegenstanders in de populaire Amerikaanse kennisquiz Jeopardy. De eerste ronde staat al op naam van Watson. Op 14, 15 en 16 februari worden de finales gespeeld.
‘Dit is veel moeilijker dan schaken’, zegt IBM Consultant Marc Teerlink over Jeopardy in de Volkskrant van zaterdag 12 februari. ‘Hoewel er honderden miljarden zetten mogelijk zijn, is het schaakspel een duidelijk omlijnd en wiskundig geheel, iets wat een computer letterlijk kan uitrekenen’. Bij een kennisquiz draait het in potentie om alle kennis van de mensheid. IBM teams hebben om te beginnen zoveel mogelijk kennis (databases, encyclopedieën, documenten en bestanden) in Watson gevoerd. Vervolgens komt er speciale software aan te pas om de kennis te ordenen. We zullen deze dagen zien of Watson – onder grote druk.. – binnen enkele seconden de juiste antwoorden tevoorschijn weet te toveren.
