Stockmann strives to be a workplace for a good life – a vision for which a significant transformation is taking
place behind the scenes

Stockmann, the iconic Finnish omnichannel retailer, has long been known for its high-quality products and superb service. Stockmann’s strong brand is intertwined with the dedication and customer-centricity of its employees. Recently, Stockmann embarked on a mission to revisit its People and Culture practices to empower their people and further develop the company culture. This ambitious objective involved revitalizing current practices and implementing new HR and workforce management systems for support. They chose to partner with IBM Consulting on laying the foundation for the project.

A shift toward self-service, automation and data-driven HR

In a collaborative effort, IBM supported Stockmann in re-designing its People and Culture (P&C) processes, laying the foundation for Stockmann’s journey towards more empowering and data-driven P&C practices and later solution implementation. Commencing with crystallizing a vision and the key design principles for the P&C transformation, both teams engaged closely in the project to make the everyday work of Stockmann’s employees easier, smarter, and simpler. The shared goal was to design processes that would enable a unified and user-friendly employee experience.

At the core of the collaboration were IBM-facilitated co-creation workshops, where creativity and practicality converged. The virtual sessions fueled the process design, by allowing participants to reach a shared understanding of what processes Stockmann would like to revisit and their purpose – and then proceed to design twelve of them in a 13-week timeframe. The IBM Consulting team provided services, industry expertise and building blocks for the Stockmann team to begin their work,  a practice that proved effective in helping the team to identify the activities, steps, and requirements for each process. Examples of the redesigned HR processes include hiring, onboarding, performance management, salary review and farewell, to name a few.

It was great to see how our international HR professionals together with IBM’s consultants co-created future-oriented ideas and concepts. Going forward, I believe the renewed People and Culture processes will help us create a unified and user-friendly employee experience. We anticipate not just an evolution in our P&C practices but a cultural shift towards a more people-centric organization where individuals are empowered by self-service and data-based decision making,” comments Sanna Raiskio, Head of Talent Attraction and Development at Stockmann.

We are proud to have been selected by Stockmann as their trusted consulting partner to co-create their People and Culture processes, and to get to help them along their journey towards more dynamic and data-driven P&C practices. IBM Consulting brought deep industry expertise across HR and technology to plan and execute the project, enabling the client team to effectively collaborate and concentrate on the core content – the identification and re-design of the processes,” said Matias Karvinen, Consulting Leader at IBM Finland.

This collaboration between IBM Consulting and Stockmann exemplifies the power of co-creation and underpins Stockmann’s commitment to creating a “workplace for a good life”, building upon the company’s legacy of over 160 years.
