Let’s fight mental health issues with tech

Whether we are aware of it or not, someone we know is most likely among the 100 of millions of people affected by mental health issues.

Collectively, we face a global mental health crisis, and it’s taking a costly toll. Providing and acting on mental health information is one of the most important applications of technology and data. And we need to do better. As of 2017, only 7 % of health apps pertained specifically to mental health. Furthermore, the expertise behind those apps isn’t always reliable.

Emerging technologies have the potential to both prevent and resolve some of the problems that people suffering from mental health-related issues have. If we utilize the opportunities, we can significantly improve the well-being of those colleagues, friends, family members that may need some resources to help them.

Video: How technology and data can improve access to mental health resources

Democratizing access to mental health care with tech could bring benefits that echo worldwide. Treatments and education should not only be available to those with enough disposable income or the “right” address. Instead, anyone with a smartphone should be able to obtain critical information to help themselves.
