Winning Projects of the IBM North America Intern Hackathon

In July, over 500 technical interns across the US and Canada participated in the IBM North America Intern Hackathon. Done completely virtual, this event was IBM’s signature experience for the interns this summer. Teams of interdisciplinary interns worked together to develop new solutions using IBM technology.

For the first time this year, we partnered with IBM’s Call for Code team in order for our interns to use their Starter Kits and help solve the world’s most pressing issues related to COVID-19, Climate Change, and Racial Injustice & Inequality. Over 100 participating teams engaged with 175 IBM mentors to create their designs and architect their solutions, consulting with Subject Matter Experts along the way to address any challenges.

After two full days of hacking, the submitted solutions were then passed along to 107 judges to go through the first round of reviews. Each submission was reviewed by at least three judges, equaling out to a total of almost 500 unique reviews! The top three teams in each category (COVID-19, Climate Change, and Racial Injustice & Inequality) were announced and invited to present their solutions to a prestigious panel of IBM Executives. These 12 finalists not only received bragging rights, but an opportunity to win some majorly competitive prizes that included JLB waterproof bluetooth speakers, airpod charging headphones, drones, Beats by Dre noise cancelling headphones, kindles, virtual escape rooms, workout kits and game/activity kits.
