Announcing the deprecation of the Kubernetes Terminal add-on.

Using add-ons while managing IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service or Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud clusters allowed you to deploy an in-browser Kubernetes Terminal to perform simple troubleshooting and run basic commands. Due to cluster IAM access tokens, the web terminal was recommended for quick access and testing of the cluster, but not production use. IBM Cloud Shell is the production-grade capability replacing the Kubernetes Terminal add-on:

What is IBM Cloud Shell?

IBM Cloud Shell is a browser-based shell environment that you can use to work in IBM Cloud, and the service became generally available in June 2020. With one click, you can start managing your apps, resources and clusters from the command line — no installation needed. And, as a part of the IBM Cloud console, it’s available to you at no charge for all account types. Learn more about IBM Cloud Shell:

Accessing IBM Cloud Shell for the IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service and Managed OpenShift

Find the IBM Cloud Shell icon on the upper right of your browser window from any page within IBM Cloud console, where a new browser tab will open and create a secure connection: 

Navigate to the desired OpenShift cluster to obtain the CLI login for that specific resource:

Copy the login command and paste in the IBM Cloud Shell window:

Now you can run any OpenShift CLI commands (i.e., oc projects).

  • Kubernetes Terminal removed from add-ons: July 1, 2021
  • Kubernetes Terminal end of support: July 1, 2021
