R Version Upgrade in Watson Studio Cloud

Watson Studio environments are getting an upgrade and it’s time for you to move to R 3.6.

In IBM Watson Studio, an environment definition defines the hardware and software configuration that you can use to run tools like notebooks, Auto AI, and the flow editor. Previously, only R 3.4 was available as default environments. Now, we are announcing the deprecation of R 3.4 in favor of R 3.6.

The new R 3.6 environments do not only differ in the R language version. Open source library versions for packages you may be using also may have changed. This might affect your ability to run the code without modification in the future. You might be required to make minor modifications upfront to ensure a smooth transition on October 30, 2019.

After October 30, 2019, you can still view and download your notebook based on deprecated R 3.4 environment, but you won’t be able to open the notebook in edit mode. You will need to change the environment to supported version to enable edit mode.

Here are the dates you need to know

R 3.6 runtimes available: August 23, 2019
Deprecate older version announcement: August 27, 2019
End of Life for R 3.4: October 30, 2019
