We are pleased to share that IBM is expanding its strategic partnership with GitHub to help companies automate work across business users, developers, and IT teams.

We are making it easier for our clients to use IBM offerings with GitHub along three fronts. 

This builds upon IBM and GitHub’s existing relationship in which numerous IBM solutions provide increased business value to customers by using GitHub’s rich features. These solutions range from IBM Watson Studio to solutions that seamlessly deploy to IBM Cloud. Today, we wanted to share some of the new ways IBM and GitHub are advancing enterprise automation. 

IBM App Connect

First, we are delivering a connector in IBM App Connect Enterprise for GitHub that will enable enhanced interactions between Software Development Life Cycle tools. The DevOps ecosystem is expanding significantly, and the rich set of connectivity in App Connect will not only help lower the toolchain tax but also help automate processes for efficiency and deliver business value by integrating various applications together and delivering insights. With App Connect’s GitHub connector, teams can have increased performance by automating cross-tooling tasks. When work is started on a feature in a work item tracker like Atlassian Jira, a matching feature branch in GitHub can be automatically created for the development team:  

IBM UrbanCode Velocity

Next, IBM UrbanCode Velocity integration will expand to include GitHub Issues. This feature will help optimize DevOps automation by delivering insights along the entire SDLC — from idea to finished feature. This integration will enable a team lead to now see how much time has been spent waiting for an issue to get to development, be peer-reviewed, deployed to an environment, tested, and approved for a release. 

Armed with this information, leaders can focus on continuously improving their software delivery processes. In addition, Velocity’s companion in the IBM DevOps family — IBM Rational Test Automation Server — will add the ability to monitor a GitHub repository for new or updated test cases. It will automatically execute test suites when updated on the cloud provider of their choice (or on-premises infrastructure), thereby drastically reducing time to push applications to production:

IBM Watson AIOps

Lastly, IBM Watson AIOps and GitHub integration will enable automation of the work of site reliability engineers (SREs) by leveraging data from GitHub. This integration will ingest key software development data and events across the software lifecycle, including code pushes, commits, reviews, deployments, and releases. 

Combining this data with operational datasets from other sources and applying sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) models, the IBM Watson team will be able to more quickly identify and eliminate risk, reduce incident counts, and improve incident response. For example, when responding to an incident, an SRE will be able to quickly identify which services changed and which developers updated the highest-risk portions of the code base so that she can rapidly find the right people to involve:

With these updates, IBM and GitHub are continuing to provide solutions that are better together.
