Environmental Scientists

are improving the quality of life through air quality.

With IBM Research, environmental scientists in Beijing have built Green Horizons, a cognitive system that can accurately determine where air pollution is coming from, where it will go and what effect it might have on citizens. Drawing from myriad sources—including industrial production, coal shipments, transportation patterns and weather forecasts—Beijing can make adjustments such as closing factories or limiting traffic during risk periods. Ultra-fine particulate matter was reduced by 20 percent in 2015. Environmental agencies in Delhi and Johannesburg also adopted these technologies in 2016 to address clean air initiatives.

Green Horizons is helping to improve air quality in Beijing, Delhi and Johannesburg.
