Upgrading IBM Case Manager to IBM Business Automation Workflow V20.0.0.2

To upgrade IBM Case Manager to IBM Business Automation Workflow, complete the following instructions:

  1. Download IBM Business Automation Workflow V20.0.0.1 from Passport Advantage.
  2. Download the IBM Business Automation Workflow V20.0.0.2 fix pack repository to a local directory. For more information, see Downloading the repositories to the local system. If you are installing the fix pack interactively by using IBM Installation Manager to connect to the live repository, this step is not required.
  3. Install IBM Business Automation Workflow V20.0.0.2. For more information, see Installing and Configuring IBM Business Automation Workflow and its OS-specific custom installation subtopics (such as the Linux topic Installing IBM Business Automation Workflow). Do not use a typical installation for IBM Case Manager upgrade scenarios. For additional guidance on configuring the deployment environment, see the optional step 3 in Upgrading your IBM Case Manager system using an external IBM Content Navigator.

    Note: If you are using the launchpad for installation and you have Internet access, you must include the cumulative fix from the live repository during installation. When you start the launchpad, you are also prompted to update the launchpad. Click Update. Otherwise, if you do not have Internet access, you must install the cumulative fix and the launchpad update (if you want to use the launchpad) from local directories:
    1. From http://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/websphere/bpm/repositories/server/launchpad/1800/, download both files for the launchpad interim fix and put them into a directory on your local system.
    2. Create the following file:
      On Windows:  C:/users/user_name/bpm_updates.properties
      On Linux or UNIX:  /user_home_directory/bpm_updates.properties
    3. In the bpm_updates.properties file, add text to point to the location of the cumulative fix and the launchpad interim fix in your local system, for example:
      launchpad.1=interim_fix_location
      fixpack.BPM_CF=local_repository_path
      For more information about installing upgrades from a local directory, see step 1 of Installing and configuring Workflow Center in the product documentation.
    Note: You can upgrade to IBM Business Automation Workflow from IBM Case Manager V5.3.3, V5.3.2, or V5.2.1.7. It is generally recommended that you upgrade to IBM Business Automation Workflow from IBM Case Manager V5.3.3. However, if you want to upgrade from a different supported version of IBM Case Manager, see the topic Troubleshooting IBM Case Manager system upgrades.
  4. Review the information in the Knowledge Center help topic Upgrading IBM Case Manager to IBM Business Automation Workflow. It provides guidance on configuring an external IBM Content Platform Engine and external IBM Content Navigator. After you have reviewed the information, follow the instructions in Upgrading your IBM Case Manager system using an external IBM Content Navigator.

    Note: Ensure that the external IBM Content Platform Engine that you configure with IBM Business Automation Workflow is the existing IBM Content Platform Engine environment that is being used with IBM Case Manager for your Design Object Store and Target Object Store. This will allow you to continue to see the solutions that were created in IBM Case Manager, from both a design and runtime perspective, in IBM Business Automation Workflow.

    Note: Also ensure that the external IBM Content Navigator that you configure with IBM Business Automation Workflow is the existing IBM Content Navigator environment that is used with IBM Case Manager. This will allow you to continue to use the same configurations and customizations in IBM Content Navigator after you upgrade to IBM Business Automation Workflow.
  5. If you were using extended capabilities in IBM Case Manager, such as IBM Forms, refer to the help topic Extending your case management system.
  6. If you want more information about additional installation options, silent install, or rollback of IBM Business Automation Workflow V20.0.0.2, select the Installing the cumulative fix tab.

Frequently asked questions

Question:  My current IBM Case Manager environment is running on IBM WebSphere Application Server V9.x. Will I be able to use the Case Manager environment with IBM Business Automation Workflow?
Answer:  Business Automation Workflow only supports WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5.x. For more information, see the Software Product Compatibility Reports (SPCR) site. To install Business Automation Workflow, you will need to install and configure IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5.x.
IMPORTANT: When Business Automation Workflow is running on WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5.x, you can configure Business Automation Workflow to work with an external IBM Content Platform Engine and external IBM Content Navigator that are running on WebSphere Application Server V9.x. However, the JDK versions of the application server must match.

Question: I am not currently using any business process management features. Do I need to configure any business process management features when I install IBM Business Automation Workflow?
Answer: Yes. You need to configure both business process management features and case management features in IBM Business Automation Workflow.
NOTE: The business process management features require a document store in the Content Platform Engine. You must plan accordingly to ensure that you create the document store when configuring IBM Business Automation Workflow. For more information, see Planning the number of databases. Also see the note about case management object stores in IBM Business Automation Workflow in the topic Configuring your system for case management.
Question: My current IBM Case Manager environment is running on Oracle WebLogic Server 12.x. Will I be able to use the Case Manager environment with IBM Business Automation Workflow?
Answer: Business Automation Workflow only supports IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5.x. For more information, see the Software Product Compatibility Reports (SPCR) site. To install Business Automation Workflow, you will need to install and configure IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5.x.
Question: Can I use an external Content Platform Engine or external IBM Content Navigator that is running on Oracle WebLogic Server?
Answer: No. An external Content Platform Engine or external IBM Content Navigator must run on WebSphere Application Server. For more information, see the Software Product Compatibility Reports (SPCR) site.
Question: When upgrading to IBM Business Automation Workflow, should I select a Standard, Advanced, or AdvancedOnly deployment environment?
Answer: The Standard and Advanced deployment environments include the case management features. To learn more about the deployment environment types, see Choosing the deployment environment type.
Question: Can I use legacy IBM Case Manager solutions that exist in the external FileNet® Content Manager target object store of Business Automation Workflow?
Answer: Yes. After configuring the external FileNet Content Manager server, you can re-run the Business Automation Workflow case configuration tasks to configure Business Automation Workflow case functionality with the external FileNet Content Manager server. This step is part of the procedure to switch to an external FileNet Content Manager server.
Question: Can I use legacy IBM Case Manager solutions with the legacy IBM Case Manager components, such as the Case Client, Case administration client, and Case Builder, after the FileNet Content Manager server that contains their repositories is configured as an external FileNet Content Manager server in Business Automation Workflow?
Answer: No. This is not a tested or supported use case. You need to use the Business Automation Workflow case components to work with the existing IBM Case Manager solutions. A large part of the Business Automation Workflow case functionality is configured in the embedded Content Navigator in Business Automation Workflow. It is an option to configure your existing Content Navigator server as an external server. That allows you to keep using most of the case components as plugins on your existing Content Navigator server. These case components are the ones that are configured in Content Navigator, such as the Case Client, Case administration client, and custom widgets. After configuring an external Content Navigator server, you will use the Case configuration tool in Business Automation Workflow to configure and maintain the case components on the external server. Case Builder is not a Content Navigator plugin, which means that you will use the Case Builder in Business Automation Workflow to edit case solutions. Do not use the legacy IBM Case Manager or the legacy IBM Case Manager configuration tool after configuring the external FileNet Content Manager server.
Question: Do I need to migrate the FileNet Content Manager tasks or workflows to Business Automation Workflow process workflows (previously known as IBM BPM workflows) after configuring an external FileNet Content Manager server in Business Automation Workflow?
Answer: No. The workflows in the external FileNet Content Manager server remain fully functional, operational, and supported.
