Take advantage of new options for tiering data to the cloud

IBM Spectrum Protectâ„¢ Version 8.1.6 introduces new options for moving data from disk storage to cloud storage for long-term retention. Cloud storage can be a cost-effective alternative for data that is accessed infrequently. The process of moving data to cloud storage is known as cloud tiering.

You can schedule daily cloud tiering by using the DEFINE STGRULE command:
  • To tier all data that meets an age requirement, specify ACTIONTYPE=TIERBYAGE.
  • To tier only inactive data that meets an age requirement, specify ACTIONTYPE=TIERBYSTATE.
  • To prevent tiering, specify ACTIONTYPE=NOTIERING.
After you define a storage tiering rule, you can specify exceptions to the tiering rule by using the new DEFINE SUBRULE command. For example, if you define a tiering rule to tier all data in a directory-container storage pool, you can define a tiering subrule to exclude the data in one or more nodes from the tiering operation.
Tip: Alternatively, to schedule cloud tiering by using the Operations Center, click Storage > Tiering Rules, and then click +Create Rule.
