Removing the rear SAS cable from the 8247-42L, 8286-41A, or 8286-42A

Use this procedure to remove the rear SAS cable from the server.

Note: The rear SAS cable is a Y cable that is connected to both SAS RAID internal adapters.

To complete this procedure, you must have prepared the system to remove and replace the rear SAS cable. For instructions, see Preparing the system to remove and replace the rear SAS cable.

To remove the rear SAS cable, complete the following steps:
  1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap on and that the ESD clip is connected to an unpainted metal surface. If not, do so now.
  2. Remove the fan cage assembly. For instructions, see Removing a fan cage.
  3. Remove the cover from the front SAS cable. Grasp the handle (A) and pull away from the side of the system, then slide the cover toward the rear to remove it as shown in Figure 1.

Note: To unplug the rear SAS cable that is connected to the SAS RAID adapter in slot P1-C14, you must first remove the adapter in slot P1-C15.

  1. Label the front SAS cable that is attached to the SAS RAID internal adapter in slot P1-C15. Press the latch (A) and unplug the connector of this cable from the disk drive backplane, as shown in Figure 2. Leave the other end of this cable plugged in to the P1 connector of the SAS RAID internal adapter.

  2. Lift the blue handles (A) of the SAS RAID internal adapter in slot P1-C15 in the direction that is shown in Figure 3.
  3. Using the blue handles on the SAS RAID internal adapter, lift the adapter up far enough to disconnect the rear SAS cable from the SAS RAID internal adapter.
  4. Disconnect the rear SAS cable (B) from the rear connector of the SAS RAID internal adapter in slot P1-C15. Access the cable connector through the opening on the side of the enclosure where the SAS RAID internal adapters are located.
  5. Pull the rear SAS cable out of the SAS RAID internal adapter enclosure so it does not interfere with the removal of the SAS RAID internal adapter.
  6. Lift the SAS RAID internal adapter out of the slot with the front SAS cable still connected to the adapter. Ensure that the front SAS cable does not catch on any components while you are lifting the SAS RAID internal adapter out of the slot.

  7. Set the SAS RAID internal adapter with the front SAS cable still connected on an appropriate ESD surface.
  8. Lift the blue handles (A) on the SAS RAID internal adapter in slot P1-C14 in the direction that is shown in Figure 4.
  9. Using the blue handles on the SAS RAID internal adapter, lift the adapter up far enough to disconnect the rear SAS cable from the SAS RAID internal adapter.
  10. Unplug the rear SAS cable (B) from the SAS RAID internal adapter, as is shown in Figure 3.
