Resource Monitoring Control (RMC) and PowerVM NovaLink

Resource Monitoring Control (RMC) is used by a management console to perform dynamic operations on a logical partition. RMC connections between PowerVM® NovaLink and each logical partition are routed through a dedicated internal virtual network. Such a configuration simplifies the network architecture for RMC, which increases the resiliency of the network to security attacks.

The RMC internal virtual network is configured such that client logical partitions can communicate only with the PowerVM NovaLink partition and not with each other.

For easier configuration of the RMC internal virtual network, assign an IPv6 link-local address to the RMC virtual network interfaces. To assign IPv6 link-local addresses to the RMC virtual network interfaces on AIX® and Linux logical partitions, the Reliable Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) packages must be at version 3.2.1.0 or later. A Hardware Management Console (HMC) cannot use the RMC internal virtual network, even if the HMC co-manages the system with PowerVM NovaLink. For an HMC to perform dynamic operations on a co-managed system, you must configure an RMC connection between the HMC and each logical partition.
