How do you uninstall IBM Rational ClearCase version 7.1 on Microsoft Windows?

Answer

The steps below will explain how to uninstall IBM Rational ClearCase version 7.1 using Installation Manager. Once that is done, if there are files left behind or if the uninstall using Installation Manager produced errors, you can use these steps to clean up.

Important note: Attempting to uninstall ClearCase without using the IBM Installation Manager will prevent you from being able to install ClearCase in the future on this machine.

REGISTRY EDITS:

This solution contains information about modifying the system registry. Before making any modifications to the Microsoft Registry Editor, it is strongly recommended that you make a backup of the existing registry.   1. Uninstall ClearCase using the Installation Manager

    Note: It is necessary to run this step as to ensure that the Installation Manager properly reflects the fact that the product is no longer installed. If you need assistance with uninstalling a product using Installation Manager, refer to the IBM Installation Manager documentation under the topic of Uninstalling products, packages, and updates.

    If this uninstall step does not completely remove ClearCase, or if you were unable to uninstall ClearCase via Installation Manager, then proceed with the following steps to manually remove ClearCase.

    Note: If you have other Rational products still installed and the only issue is a few files left behind, it will be easier to leave the extra files, as otherwise you will have to uninstall all installed products using the Installation Manager.

    If you decide to continue on, you should realize that some of these steps might be unnecessary if the uninstall was able to successfully remove them.

  2. Uninstall MVFS
    1. Open a command prompt
    2. Change directory to <ClearCase install directory>\ClearCase\install\inf
    3. Execute: installmvfs.exe /q /u

  3. Uninstall Global Monitoring (if applicable)
    1. Download ClearCase-krc-agent.windows_*.zip from a ClearCase repository
    2. Unzip the file to C:\gm_install_package
    3. Change directory to C:\gm_install_package\windows\setup.exe
    4. When the Installshield graphical user interface comes up, choose to remove Global monitoring and follow the prompts

  4. If any of the following products are installed (Rational ClearQuest, Rational RequisitePro, Rational ClearCase Remote Client, Rational SoDA, Rational TestManager, Rational Robot or Rational ProjectConsole), you must uninstall them using the Installation Manager BEFORE you proceed to the rest of the cleanup.

    Note: Depending on how successful the uninstall was, some of the following steps may not be needed.

  5. Stop CM services
    1. Open a command prompt
    2. Change directory to <ClearCase install directory>\common\CM\profiles\cmprofile\bin
    3. Execute: stopserver.bat server1
    4. Change directory to <ClearCase install directory>\common\eWAS\bin
    5. Execute: wasservice.exe -remove cmprofile

  6. Uninstall WebSphere Application Server (WAS)
    1. Change Directory to <ClearCase install directory>\common\eWAS\uninstall
    2. Execute:uninstall.exe
    3. Follow the Installshield prompts to uninstall WAS. Make sure to check the box 'delete all profiles'

  7. Uninstall IHS (IBM HTTP Server)
    1. Change directory to <ClearCase install directory>\common\IHS\uninstall
    2. Execute: uninstall.exe
    3. Follow the Installshield prompts to uninstall IHS

  8. Uninstall the IHS Update Installer
    1. Change directory to <ClearCase install directory>\common\IHS_updateinstaller\uninstall
    2. Execute: uninstall.exe
    3. Follow the Installshield prompt to uninstall IHS

  9. Remove the ClearCase installation directory
    1. Execute the command rmdir /q /s <ClearCase install directory>
    2. If this fails, skip this step and continue to next step

  10. Remove the directories outside of the ClearCase installation directory
    1. Delete %Temp%\ratl*
    2. Delete <Global Monitoring Installation Directory (if applicable)

  11. Remove all of the mvfs$$.sys files from C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

  12. Delete the registry entries for ClearCase:
    1. Click start > run > regedit.exe
    2. Delete from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\atria
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Albd
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cccredmgr
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Application\ClearCase
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\System\Mvfs
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LockMgr
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Mvfs

      Note: The above keys may also be found in the following locations as well.
      * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001
      * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002
      * HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003
    3. Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER \software\atria
    4. If there are no other Rational Products installed:
      • Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Rational Software\ClearCase
      • Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Rational Software\Licensing\2.0
      • Delete (if it exists) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{2F766012-B4BB-11D3-B9D9-00207814BCF5}

        This key represents the path chooser for IBM Rational products. If the key exists and you are attempting to install for the first time, you can receive the following error message:

        Registry write error during installation phase for registry path "HKCR\CLSID\{2F766012-B4BB-11D3-B9D9-00207814BCF5}\InprocServer32\
    5. Remove the MVFS network provider information from these keys:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\HwOrder
      "ProviderOrder"="Mvfs,RDPNP,LanmanWorkstation,WebClient,Nfsnp"

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\Order
      "ProviderOrder"="Mvfs,RDPNP,LanmanWorkstation,WebClient,Nfsnp"

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\NetworkProvider\ShortName
      "nfs"="NFS Network"
      "Mvfs"="ClearCase Dynamic Views"

  13. Reboot the machine

  14. If the install directory removal failed in step 7, try to remove the installation directory once again after the reboot. If it fails, rename the installation directory.

    Note: Although not normally necessary, you may need to boot up Windows in Safe mode to get access to the directory if errors occur when trying to remove or rename following the normal reboot.

Note: During an uninstall we preserve some files at the root of the installation drive in a folder called Rational.preserve and starting in 7.1.1 we also create a Rational.preserve folder in c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBM. These files will be used on a subsequent installation, so if you really wanted to start fresh, you should "rename" these folders before the installation. Never "delete" this folder as it does contain configuration files that can be of use to you after you reinstall. For example, if this is your ClearCase Registry server, your view and VOB registration files are some of the files in this folder.
