Question & Answer
Question
How can you perform a clean uninstall of IBM® Rational® ClearQuest® 2003 and 7.0.x versions on Microsoft® Windows® operating systems?
Cause
Although the Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel will effectively uninstall ClearQuest, there are some residual files, directories and registry settings that remain.
Answer
This procedure outlines the necessary steps to completely remove ClearQuest from the Windows operating system, which requires modifying the Windows Registry.
Note: If you have the ClearQuest Shipping Server installed along with IBM Rational ClearCase®, you must uninstall ClearCase before you can uninstall ClearQuest.
- Export your connections from the ClearQuest Maintenance Tool
- Stop all services associated with ClearQuest, such as IBM HTTP Server, ClearQuest Mail Service, ClearQuest Registry Server, Websphere Application Server and the Atria Location Broker if the Shipping Server was installed.
- Remove ClearQuest using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel.
- If prompted, restart the computer.
- Delete ClearQuest from the install directory (installed by default in
C:\Program Files\Rational\ClearQuest
). If ClearQuest is the ONLY Rational product installed, then theC:\Program Files\Rational
directory can be deleted.
- Delete the ClearQuest RCP Eclipse client workspace files from the Windows account temp filespace (located by default in
C:\Documents and Settings\<user account>\.Rational\ClearQuest
). If ClearQuest is the ONLY Rational product installed, then theC:\Documents and Settings\<user account>\.Rational
directory can be deleted.
- After completing the above steps, make a back up of the registry, and ensure that the following registry keys have been removed:
- If ClearQuest is the only Rational Product on the system remove the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Rational Software
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Rational Software
HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Rational Software
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cqregsvr
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MailService
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog
\Application\ClearQuest
For ClearQuest 7.0.x
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IBMHTTPServer6.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IBMWAS6Service - RWP Servlet
Note: The above HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE keys might also be found in the following locations as well: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003
- If ClearQuest is not the only Rational Product installed:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Rational Software\ClearQuest
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Rational Software\ClearQuest
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Rational Software\ClearQuest Packages
HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Rational Software\ClearQuest
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cqregsvr
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MailService
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog
\Application\ClearQuest
Note: The above HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE keys might also be found in the following locations as well: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003
- Delete any remaining ClearQuest shortcuts on the desktop and start menu.
- ClearQuest Shipping Server ONLY
Note that if you have installed the ClearQuest Shipping Server, you will need to remove the ClearCase directory created in the Rational directory as well. Other directories can be removed if no other Rational products have been installed on this system.
Note: If other Rational products are installed, be sure you only remove the ClearQuest directory.
Make a back up of the registry, then delete Windows registry keys in the following locations: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Albd
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Atria\ClearCase
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Atria
- For ClearQuest 7.0.0.1 iFix03 ONLY
Remove the ClearQuest Release Area and the installation directory tree. - See technote technote 1272846 for an issue specific to the ClearQuest 7.0.0.1 version with iFix03.
- Uninstall GSKit.
See technote technote 1250050 for details on uninstalling GSKit. The GSKIT is installed as part of many Rational products for LDAP support.
- The following registry keys will remove IBM Rational ClearQuest from the Add/Remove Programs list in the event that Add/Remove Program fails:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Uninstall\{CE7BC4DE-8956-4B80-BFB7-541812764162}]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products
\ED4CB7EC659808B4FB7B458121671426]
- Restart the host to complete the procedure.
Now you can start to reinstall ClearQuest either from CD or a product release area. You can use the connection file you exported earlier in order to quickly re-establish your repository connections.

Feature Enhancement
A request for enhancement exists, RFE RATLC01002293, for the removal of registry keys and files automatically during the uninstall process. It is available for viewing on the RFE Community Web site.
This solution contains information about modifying the system registry. Before making any modifications to the Microsoft Registry Editor, it is strongly recommended that you make a backup of the existing registry. For more information describing how to back up the registry, refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base article 256986 |
