MustGather: Data collection for possible VOB database corruption

Question & Answer

Question

Is there a list of data to collect when I suspect that my IBM® Rational® ClearCase® VOB has database corruption?

Answer

Please collect the following information to assist IBM Rational Customer Support in evaluating your VOB database concerns.

DATA TO COLLECT

  1. ClearCase logs and diagnostic data.
Note: If you are unsure how to collect this information, there are instructions available for
    UNIX®, Linux® and Microsoft Windows®.
    • ClearCase version
    • ClearCase logs
    • Operating System information
  2. Directory listing of the db directory that resides in the VOB storage directory.
Note: If you are not sure where your VOB's storage directory is, you can run "cleartool describe vob:\<VOB_tag>". The storage location will be listed after "VOB storage host:pathname".
Once you know where you VOB storage directory is, here is an example:
    • UNIX and Linux:
      1. cd <path_to_vob_storage_directory>/db
      2. ls -al > db_ls.txt
    • Windows:
      1. cd <path_to_vob_storage_directory.vbs>\db
      2. dir > db_dir.txt
  3. Lock the VOB and perform a dbcheck as root (UNIX/Linux) or as a ClearCase Administrator (Windows) on the problematic VOB database. If you are unable to lock the VOB, run the dbcheck but be sure to alert your technical support engineer that you were unable to lock the VOB. See technote 1122748 for details on how to run the ClearCase dbcheck utility.

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER

  1. When was the last time dbcheck was run before this event?
  2. Did the system recently (since the last dbcheck with no errors) experience a power failure, hardware failure, system crash, system panic or disk full situation? If so, please list these events giving the date an time when possible.
  3. Are there any disk or SCSI errors reported in the system logs?
  4. Is the VOB server host configured for RAID or any type of disk mirroring/striping? If so, please send specifics of the RAID configuration.
  5. Is the VOB located on a NAS device? If so please send the make and model of that device (example: for NetApp and IBM file servers use "sysconfig -v" and for EMC file servers use "pkginfo").
  6. From when is the most recent backup of this VOB? Did dbcheck report zero errors on this backup?
  7. Is this VOB replicated? If yes, how many replicas are there?

Note: If the files are particularly large, you may need to FTP the data to support. Please coordinate with your IBM Rational Technical Support Engineer to obtain instructions on how and where to put your data.
